The founder of the brand, Jan Tana, who had an entrepreneurial streak since childhood, opened her first solarium back in 1982. As it was the only tanning salon in Virginia at the time, business quickly took off and she started salons one after the other.
She went from a tanning salon to making makeup for bodybuilding competitions unexpectedly even for herself, once attending a local performance of athletes in 1987. Jan Tana was delighted with the performance of bodybuilders, but noted that with make-up (tan) their muscles would look much more spectacular, highlighting the strongest sides of the muscles of each of the athletes.
